The vision for the proposed 1960 Olympic Ski Museum originated over eight years ago when a group of dedicated North Lake Tahoe residents came together. This dynamic group shared a goal: to build a community resource and permanent tribute to the 1960 Olympic Winter Games and California's rich ski heritage.
Museum Project Timeline Overview:
2008: Squaw Valley Ski Museum Foundation (SVSMF) formed; Established as a California 501(c)(3) public charity
2009: SVSMF presented Preliminary Master Plan; Formed community committee to review project scope and building sites
2010: SVSMF supported Olympic Heritage Committee's weeklong 50th Anniversary of the 1960 Olympic Winter Games celebration
2010-2012: SVSMF operated Interim Olympic Ski Museum in Squaw Valley Village
2011: SVSMF hired local project manager to progress museum master plan
2012-2014: SVSMF and Placer County continue site studies including extensive review of "7-11 Gateway Site"
2015: In July, Placer County Board of Supervisors votes 3-1 to allow application for museum site in Squaw Valley Park
2016: In September, SVSMF officially submits Environmental Questionnaire (EQ) and Site Application to Placer County
With the submission of the Environmental Questionnaire (EQ) and Site Application to the Placer County Planning Department at the end of September, SVSMF anticipates working closely with the following county departments: County Executive Office - Lake Tahoe, Parks & Recreation, and Facilities.
Tentative EQ/Site Application Timeline:
October to December 2016: Initial county planning review and feedback
Winter 2017: SVSMF to conduct required project studies (ie. Tree Arborist Study, Parking & Traffic Study)
Spring 2017: Review of study findings with county and second round of EQ feedback
Spring/Summer 2017: Preliminary public presentations and community info sessions
Fall/Winter 2017: Anticipated public hearings and meetings (ie. Squaw Valley MAC, County Planning Commission, Board of Supervisors)
